The flat map is an azimuthal equidistant projection: a point at latitude φ lies r = 10,007.5 km · (90° − φ)/90° from the centre of the disc, in a direction given by its longitude. The Equator is 10,007.5 km out, the rim (the “South Pole”) 20,015 km.
The flat Sun stands above the point where the real Sun is overhead, H = 800 km / tan 7.2° ≈ 6,333 km up; its radius is 29 km, so straight overhead it looks exactly 0.53° wide. Its height above the horizon is atan(H/d), its apparent diameter 2·asin(R/distance). As a nearby lamp, its light also weakens with the square of the distance. The Moon works the same way, above the point where the real Moon is overhead.
Light models: range (fades from 72% of the range), cone (a downward cone, by the angle from its axis), projection (the image moves onto the dome, above the Sun), globe daylight (flat Sun, but day and night as on the globe), real view → flat earth (works out from the real direction where the Sun would have to be).
The dome of stars is a spherical cap resting on the rim, H high above the pole. Each star sits on the dome above its own “sub-star point”, and the dome turns with sidereal time, so Polaris ends up at the top. The Milky Way is painted on the same dome.
The real sky comes from astronomical formulas: positions of the Sun and Moon from simplified series (about 0.3°), ~150 real bright stars and a faint background. The sky colours come from a physical model of the atmosphere – Rayleigh and Mie scattering and ozone absorption, single scattering plus an approximation of multiple scattering – for both geometries: a spherical Earth, and a flat, plane-parallel atmosphere lit by a small, nearby Sun. Twilight, the Earth’s shadow and the Belt of Venus follow from it, not from painting.
The landscape uses real elevations (NOAA ETOPO 2022; 15–60″ detail around the featured places, 0.1° elsewhere, plus fine detail generated from the local roughness) and real colours (NASA Blue Marble). On the globe every point is lowered by d²/2R (no atmospheric refraction unless switched on in the Lab), so distant ground sinks below the horizon; on the disc nothing is lowered. Trees, ships, igloos and buildings are placed by climate and land cover; their sizes are realistic.
Limits: the lunar orbit is simplified; the eclipse is shown by colouring the Moon inside the Earth’s shadow; the time is local mean solar time; the landscape beyond the data resolution is plausible, not surveyed.
A lapos térkép azimutális, távolságtartó vetület: a φ szélességű pont távolsága a korong közepétől r = 10 007,5 km · (90° − φ)/90°, iránya a hosszúságból adódik. Az Egyenlítő 10 007,5 km-re, a perem („Déli-sark”) 20 015 km-re van.
A lapos Nap abban a pontban áll a korong fölött, ahol a valódi Nap épp fej fölött van, H = 800 km / tg 7,2° ≈ 6333 km magasan; sugara 29 km, így fej fölött pont 0,53°-osnak látszik. Látszó magassága atan(H/d), látszó átmérője 2·asin(R/távolság). Közeli lámpaként a fénye a távolság négyzetével gyengül. A Hold ugyanígy, a valódi Hold alatti pont fölött.
Fény-modellek: hatótáv (a távolság 72%-ától fokozatosan halványul), fénykúp (lefelé néző kúp, a tengelytől mért szög szerint), kivetítés (a kép a búrára kerül, a Nap fölé), gömbmodell fényviszony (a lapos Nap helyén, de a gömb szerinti nappallal), valós látvány → laposföld (a valódi irányból kiszámolja, hol kellene lennie a Napnak).
A csillagbúra gömbsüveg, alapja a perem, csúcsa H magasan a sark fölött.
